Why Haley’s Court in Vilano Beach Is My Favorite Retro Motel Escape

Hey y’all! My husband and I have this little tradition of sneaking away for quick coastal getaways from our Ocala/Gainesville neck of the woods, and Haley’s Court in Vilano Beach has become our absolute go-to spot. We’ve stayed a few times now, and every visit just feels like coming back to a place that knows exactly how to make you relax and smile.

We first pulled up on one of those spur-of-the-moment weekends, craving nothing more than beach air and zero emails. Right away, as we were unloading the car, I spotted these two adorable older couples checking in. They had their shirts neatly hung on hangers (classic!), and one of the guys looks over and says to the group, “Okay now, don’t make too much noise!” in the sweetest, playful way. Around 4:30, I see the four of them heading out—I’m guessing for an early bird special dinner, if you know what I mean lol. It was the cutest thing, and it hit me: that’s exactly what makes Haley’s Court so special. It’s got this welcoming energy that draws everyone—younger couples like us just needing to escape the inbox chaos, retired folks meeting up for a fun weekend double-date, even girls’ night groups popping bottles of wine in the courtyard. It’s multi-generational in the best way, all under that cozy retro roof.

The place itself is this lovingly restored 1950s motor lodge (family-owned, with deep St. Augustine roots), right at 150 Vilano Road. They kept all the vintage charm—those original tiles, the drive-up feel, the little courtyard—but added modern touches like comfy pillowtop beds, kitchenettes in most rooms, smart TVs, and super easy contactless check-in. We usually grab a queen studio (the Ocean or similar ones are our fave), and it’s just right: cozy without feeling cramped, perfect for brewing coffee in the morning and crashing after a beach day.

No big pool or fancy restaurant, but who needs that when you’re literally a 5-minute stroll from Vilano Beach? Sunrise walks with my mug in hand are my happy place, and sunset picnics on the sand are magic. The fishing pier’s right there too (don’t miss the Bluebird of Happiness photo!), plus Publix for snacks, cute coffee spots, and laid-back eateries. If we want more action, downtown St. Augustine’s only about 10 minutes away for the lighthouse or a wander on St. George Street.

Real talk, because I always keep it honest: parking can be a squeeze (we’ve circled a bit or grabbed street spots), and with the exterior doors, you might catch the occasional footsteps—but it never once bothered us. No daily housekeeping, but it’s spotless, and the free washer/dryer is a game-changer.

We love going in spring or fall for the milder temps and quieter crowds—summer’s lively but hotter, winter’s peaceful but can be breezy. Booking’s straightforward on their site or Booking.com (affiliate link: Book here via Booking.com), and it always feels worth every penny.

Bottom line? Haley’s Court isn’t just a stay—it’s that warm, nostalgic hug of Old Florida that brings people together across generations. We’ve got our next trip already in the works because once you experience it, you just want to come back.

Have you stayed at a spot like this where the guests themselves make the magic? Or got a favorite Vilano hidden gem? Spill in the comments—I read them all and love swapping stories! If you’re itching for more cozy Florida escapes, subscribe so you catch the next one. Talk soon, friends!
